Taxi-driver murder suspect will face Chinese justice

9:49 pm on 18 June 2010

Police say a man held in China on suspicion of killing Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini will be dealt with in a Chinese court of law.

Mr Mohini was killed in January, in what police say was a frenzied knife attack, after picking up a passenger in central Auckland.

Two New Zealand police officers travelled to China last Friday after 23-year-old Zhen Xiao was located in Shanghai.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones says Chinese authorities have indicated that Mr Zhen is a citizen of China and will therefore be dealt with by the Chinese justice system.

While Mr Zhen is yet to be formally charged, Mr Jones says, precedents have been set involving homicides in other countries where the offender has fled to China.

He says those cases have all been successfully resolved in Chinese courts.
