Stewart loses appeal against sentence

The man who evaded police in Canterbury for three months last year has lost an appeal against his sentence and the minimum period of imprisonment imposed.

William Stewart pleaded guilty to 47 charges, including burglary, possession of a firearm and dangerous driving. He was sentenced to seven years and four months in jail, with a non-parole period of four years and 10 months.

Stewart argued the sentence was manifestly excessive because he was given no credit for remorse.

However, the Court of Appeal says it cannot reconcile his claim of remorse with his refusal to help recover the stolen property or tell police who helped him.

The appeal has been dismissed, but Stewart's time in prison will be reduced by eight months because of an error in calculating the minimum period of imprisonment.
