Prisoner compensation scheme extended by two years

8:40 am on 24 June 2010

Parliament has passed legislation that extends the deadline for claims in the prisoner compensation law.

The law imposes restrictions on compensation that prisoners can claim for alleged human rights breaches while being held in custody.

It also outlines a process under which a prisoner's victim can make a claim against any compensation awarded for such breaches.

The legislation passed under urgency extends the deadline for claims to have been received from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2012.
