Wellington cab drivers protest new airport layout

Taxi drivers say the new layout at Wellington airport will cost them their jobs.

From Thursday, the two taxi lanes at Wellington airport will have one rank dedicated to Wellington Combined Taxis and a rank further back for all other cab companies.

Taxis drove slowly through the city streets on Monday to protest against the new layout, which the airport says is designed to make it less congested and safer for customers, not to push out cabs.

It says Wellington Combined won the tender for the best-placed lane.

Capital Taxis general manager, Tim Lauagiagi, says some drivers are still paying off their cars to keep up with the airport's policy that vehicles be less than 10 years old.

He says small taxi companies are going to lose a lot of business and many drivers will lose their jobs.
