Sculptures shortlisted for gateway to Wellington

Three sculptures have been shortlisted for a $900,000 gateway to Wellington, but their designs are under wraps.

The winning sculpture will replace an earlier project, the Hook of Maui, an illuminated fish hook, which was cancelled last year because of difficulties with a laser beam and cost overruns.

The three finalists are Kristin O'Sullivan Peren, Phil Price and a joint collaboration between Paul Rolfe and Arini Poutu.

Wellington Sculpture Trust chairman Neil Plimmer says the sculpture designs are still in their early stages, but will be contemporary. He says they are very different to the Hook of Maui.

The winning sculpture is intended to be sited on a motorway bridge over the Hutt railway line at the city's northern side.

Mr Plimmer says he expects to announce the winner by October.
