4:59 pm on 6 July 2010

The European Union says it is withdrawing special trade concessions from Sri Lanka next month because the government has not guaranteed that it will implement charters on civil, political and children's rights that also outlaw torture.

Sri Lanka's exports to the EU last year were worth more than 1.24 billionm euros ($US1.55 billion).

Sri Lanka has accused EU of interfering in its internal affairs.
