Southland Mayor Frana Cardno says getting the green light for a new cycle trail in her region will deliver an economic boost to rural communities.

The Government announced on Tuesday it was to to invest $18.85 million in eight new cycle trails.

Of this, $4 million will go to a trail in the Southland region. Mayor Frana Cardno says it will provide jobs and an economic boost for the region. She is hoping it will be as successful as the Central Otago Rail Trail.

The eight projects are in Taupo, Hawke's Bay, Opotiki, Nelson, Westport, Mount Cook, Queenstown and Clutha.
