PM tells Chinese leader security will be improved

5:13 pm on 9 July 2010

The Prime Minister has told Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping that security for dignitaries will be tightened at Parliament, following an incident during his visit to New Zealand.

Green Party co-leader Russel Norman was involved in a scuffle with Chinese security staff when he tried to display a Tibetan flag as the Chinese leader entered Parliament last month.

Since then, Parliament's Speaker has written to MPs telling them he expects those who want to protest at Parliament to advise of their intentions, to allow for an agreement about the protest.

John Key said he and Mr Xi discussed the Speaker's ruling when they met on Tuesday night in Beijing.
