Auckland investment in Queenstown airport welcomed

The head of Christchurch airport says he's confident its position as the South Island's major international port won't be threatened by an alliance between the Auckland and Queenstown airport companies.

Auckland International Airport announced on Thursday it would buy 25% of the Queenstown operation.

Christchurch International Airport chief executive Jim Boult says 92% of international visitors to the South Island arrive in Christchurch and he doubts the city could be bypassed as a result of the alliance.

He says Christchurch airport has played a major role in developing South Island tourism and he's pleased Auckland airport is also investing in the area.
