A 26-year-old man has been killed and five people injured in a car crash after a police chase in Christchurch.

The death is the ninth associated with police pursuits in recent months.

Police say a patrol car stopped a Mitsubishi Lancer carrying six people for a routine check on Manchester Street after 1am on Saturday, but the car sped off as an officer approached it.

Police chased the car for a few blocks and found it had crashed into a concrete power pole at the intersection of Manchester St and Moorhouse Ave.

Three men and three women, aged between 18 and 26 years were in the car, and police say one of the occupants was trying to run from the scene.

The driver was killed, two of the car's occupants were critically injured, another was seriously hurt and two received minor injuries.
