Betancourt seeks compensation for kidnap

Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, who spent six years as a hostage of FARC guerrillas, is seeking compensation from the Colombian government for her ordeal.

The government has rejected the demand.

The BBC reports Ms Betancourt and her family are seeking $US6.8 million in damages for emotional distress and loss of earnings during her time as a hostage.

Colombian officials have expressed surprise, noting that troops risked their lives to rescue her in July 2008.

The government says she ignored advice not to go to the area where she was kidnapped.
