Car with camera to join war on illegal parking

7:11 am on 16 July 2010

A car fitted with a camera which will be driven round Wellington streets photographing vehicles parked where they shouldn't be is expected to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

Wellington City Council says vehicles stopping illegally near schools, on bus stops and on broken yellow lines pose a risk to the safety of both pedestrians and road users.

Council spokesperson Jon Visser says the car with the camera, to be used from Monday, will be able to catch multiple offenders in a matter of seconds.

The council expects 30 tickets to be issued daily, bringing in about $375,000 a year.
