Wellington trials Rugby World Cup traffic changes

2:46 pm on 17 July 2010

Traffic restrictions are being placed around Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday as a trial of arrangements for matches during next year's Rugby World Cup.

Ticket holders for Saturday night's test match between the All Blacks and South Africa cannot be picked up or dropped off on Waterloo Quay between the railway station and the stadium.

From 8.30pm until 10.30pm the Murphy Street motorway off-ramp will be closed, as will the southern end of Thorndon Quay, to make way for pedestrians leaving the stadium.

A Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean says the traffic restrictions will improve safety for rugby fans because there will be more room for fans to spill out onto the road.
