Demand to grow new gold kiwifruit outstrips supply

Demand to grow two new gold kiwifruit varieties has outstripped the land available to plant them on.

Zespri has received more than 700 bids to grow the new early season gold variety and the potentially long-storing gold.

Last month, Zespri announced it was commercially releasing the two new gold varieties as well as a new sweet green variety, allowing up to 600 hectares to be licensed for planting or grafting this season.

The two gold varieties have been oversubscribed by growers and Zespri is having to allow an extra 50 hectares of each to be planted.

Bids for a new green variety covered 104 hectares.
