High-fat Maori diet a boil-up for the books

A former All Black captain turned health campaigner wants a study into what food is right for Maori.

Taine Randell involved whanau at his local Te Aranga Marae in Flaxmere, Hawke's Bay, in a 10-week high-protein high-fat diet that included traditional pork bone and puha boil-ups.

The result? Participants lost an average of eight kilograms in weight.

Mr Randell told Waatea News that Maori have a different metabolism to Pakeha but that it's not something the researchers want to look at.

He says Maori traditionally had more protein and fat in their diet but didn't eat gluten-rich food like bread and pasta.
