Stormy weather easing

7:05 am on 2 August 2010

Stormy weather was easing in most parts of the country on Monday, though heavy rain was expected on the ranges of eastern Bay of Plenty.

On Sunday night, northwest gales raged from Canterbury to Wairarapa, gusting up to 130 km/h, and flooding caused problems in parts of Wellington.

Widespread heavy rain has eased over the west coast of the South Island and the Southern Alps on Sunday evening.

While the rough weather was mostly expected to ease on Monday, heavy rain was predicted on eastern Bay of Plenty ranges.

Drivers are advised to take care as are skiers and trampers.

Wellington flooding

Extremely heavy rain struck Wellington at around 6pm on Sunday, with the Johnsonville area getting 21mm of rain in just one hour. Water had to be pumped out of some houses.

Murray Dunbar of Wellington Fire Service says crews were kept busy at that time.
