Two Dunedin police officers are recovering from concussion after being assaulted on Saturday night.

Police say the constables were patrolling David Street in the suburb of Caversham when they intervened in a domestic dispute just before midnight.

They were kicked, punched and bitten by two men and a woman.

Despite using handcuffs and pepper spray on their assailants, both constables suffered concussion and needed medical help.

Two men and a woman, all in their twenties, have been charged with assault, threatening to kill, obstructing police and resisting arrest.

Sergeant Dave Scott of the Dunedin police said the constables were serving their community and the attack is senseless.
