Wellington land slip causes major traffic congestion

1:42 pm on 9 August 2010

A major landslip on Sunday afternoon on State Highway 2, one of the main routes out of Wellington, caused big traffic problems well into the evening.

Despite the north-bound lanes between Ngauranga and Petone reopening, some motorists were stuck on the road for hours on Sunday afternoon.

When others took the recommended detour, via SH1 and Haywards Hill, there was another major hold up at the Paramatta roundabout as traffic from north and south merged.

It was about 9pm before traffic was flowing more freely again.

Mark Owen from the Transport Agency says the slip brought down about 50 cubic metres of soil and some power lines.

He says more work will be carried out at the site including remedial measures to make the steep sides of the highway as safe as possible.
