Man charged over dinosaur egg theft

A 52-year-old Invercargill artist has been charged with stealing a fossilised dinosaur egg from Otago Museum's gift shop.

The museum says the egg went missing from the shop on its ground floor last Tuesday morning, and was returned undamaged to the Dunedin Central Police Station two days later.

The man was recognised on security camera footage from the shop and the station, before he turned himself in to Invercargill police on Monday.

Police say he is charged with stealing the dinosaur egg and with shoplifting in Gore earlier that week.

He will appear in Invercargill District Court on Friday.
