Improvement to coastline communication

9:59 am on 21 August 2010

Ship to shore communication along the rugged coastline of southern Hawke's Bay, is being dramatically improved.

The Cape Turnagain Marine Radio Users group will officially launch a new system on Saturday afternoon to improve marine safety for coastal communities.

Area search and rescue co-ordinator Bill Nicholson says the system includes a marine radio repeater at the Cape and an air-to-ground and marine radio at Herbertville and Akitio.

He says it will not only dramatically improve ship to shore communications, but also allow coastal communities to talk to each other.

Because of the shape of the coastline, Mr Nicholson says communities have had to rely on line of sight communication.
