Bali bombers could get out of jail early

Prison authorities in Indonesia have recommended cancelling life sentences imposed on key players in the 2002 Bali bombings.

Abdul Ghoni and Sawad prepared the explosives used in the attacks, which killed 202 people, including three New Zealanders and 88 Australians.

They were sentenced to life behind bars but authorities say that should be cut to 20 years, the ABC reports.

If Indonesia's president agrees to that, the men will be eligible for a scheme that could see them out in 15 years.

They have won favour for good behaviour. However, Abdul Ghoni told the ABC he still thinks the bombers did the right thing and will go to Heaven, while Sawad says he would do the same again.

Indonesian counter-terrorism police warn the government has no de-radicalisation programme in its prisons and extremism is spreading in the community.
