South Taranaki people pitch in for storm repair work

6:18 am on 7 March 2012

South Taranaki Maori are pitching in to help repair damage caused by a severe storm that lashed the region over the weekend.

Hawera, Patea and Waverley suffered the most when gales tore roofs off houses, uprooted trees and toppled over power lines - cutting off the electricity supply to thousands of homes.

Nga Hapu o Ngaruahine Iwi Incorporated executive chair Daisy Noble says her marae near Hawera and others in the district need repairing.

She says fortunately the marae has insurance and plenty of hands to come back and mend the wharenui.

Ms Noble says Mawhitiwhiti Kanihi Pa had its outside panels ripped off and its fence was damaged.

And she says the nearby Aoteroa Marae will also need some minor repairs.

Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui in Hawera has set up a drop-in centre for iwi members to register any issues like property damage, power outages, or any need they may have for provisions.

Already more than 330 people have signed up to receive assistance.

The Patea Library is also being used for people to get help with insurance claims with the Ministry of Social Development.

Powerco says it is restoring power to consumers in South Taranaki and Whanganui but major repairs to its network in more remote areas may not be fixed until later in the week.
