Board wants to bill amended to exclude Tamaki block

6:45 pm on 7 March 2012

The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board in Auckland wants Parliament to amend a Treaty Settlement Bill for Ngati Whatua o Orakei, to exclude what's called the Tamaki block of just over three hectares of land at Narrow Neck.

The bill will be introduced to Parliament on Thursday.

Board chairperson Chris Darby says a resolution passed at its meeting last night, states that there is a clear expectation backed up by a High Court decision, that when the navy no longer needs the land it will be returned to the local community.

He says the piece of land which forms a natural grandstand to the Hauraki gulf, has a long history for both Maori and Pakeha.

Mr Darby says unless the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Bill is altered the block will be alienated from future public use, which would be of huge community concern.

He says Auckland Mayor Len Brown has written to the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, seeking support from the Crown to address the board's concerns.
