Submissions sought on Maori economic document

7:53 pm on 14 March 2012

The Government appointed panel charged with developing a national economic strategy and action plan for Maori, is seeking submissions on a discussion document it's just released.

The independent nine person panel set up last September, has the job of helping raise the rate of return on Maori owned assets and growing the Maori contribution to New Zealand's economy.

Chairman Ngahiwi Tomoana says historically Government led economic strategies have targeted Maori, without allowing them to have any input.

He says the Maori Economic Development Panel is Maori driven and based on Maori structures and protocols.

Mr Tomoana says the discussion document notes that both the Maori and New Zealand economies are at important crossroads and face significant challenges and opportunities.

He says submissions on the document close on 11 April.
