The Government says its goal to get more youngsters into early childhood education will help support vulnerable tamariki.

The target is one of 10 announced by Prime Minister John Key on Thursday.

He wants more young children to enrol in early children education, particularly Maori and Pacific.

Mr Key says the plan's not part of a wish list - is on a to-do list, to be led by senior Cabinet ministers and chief executives of Government agencies.

Mr Key says evidence shows that time spent in early childhood education helps future learning.

He says this should help to uplift these tamariki and provide a positive pathway for them starting in early childhood education.

The Ministry of Education says Maori participation in early childhood education has been growing over the past five years, and stands at 90% which is 8.2% lower than Pakeha.
