Iwi decides not to appeal harbour dredging

Ngai Te Rangi iwi in the Bay of Plenty has decided not to appeal a decision granting the Port of Tauranga permission to dredge Tauranga harbour to provide access for bigger container ships.

The port company plans to deepen the harbour to a maximum of 17.4 metres and also to widen it.

Ngai Te Rangi appealed the original decision by a panel of commissioners granting the consent, to the Environment Court, but the court upheld the decision.

An elder, Hauata Palmer says based on legal advice, the iwi decided appealing the decision now to the High Court would not serve any useful purpose.

He says the iwi has been through a hearing process twice and lost.

Mr Palmer says Ngai Te Rangi still opposes any dredging of the harbour.
