Judges of the Maori Excellence in Farming Award have announced the three finalists in this year's competition for the Ahuwhenua Trophy.

They are the Tauhara Moana Trust, which runs a 590 hectare dairy farm near Taupo, the Kapenga M Trust, which milks a large herd south of Rotorua and the Wharepi Whanau Trust, which operates a 71 hectare farm near Te Puke.

The Ahuwhenua Trophy is the premier award for Maori farmers and acknowledges and celebrates business excellence in the farming sector and this year attracted entries from Maori farmers from all over the North Island.

The four judges visited each property and assessed them on a range of measures, including productivity, profitability, sustainability, innovation and governance.

The winner of the Maori Excellence in Farming Award will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in June.
