Creidt Union executive goes behind bars to help inmates

7:17 am on 27 March 2012

An executive at Aotearoa Credit Union is going behind bars to put prisoners straight about their finances.

Tuhi Leef of Ngapuhi is visiting jails to set up inmates with accounts for when they are released.

The union's national branch network manager says he is going where the banks do not want to go.

Mr Leef says working with the Department of Corrections is quite an experience.

He says usually he is in the boardrooms of some of Auckland's corporates and he finds it humbling to go into prisons in the North Island.

Tuhi Leef says everybody deserves a second chance - and reckons that him having Maori blood, means inmates are very receptive and support of his work.
