Beneficiaries come to aid of striking meatworkers

6:46 am on 30 March 2012

A Hawke's Bay iwi says beneficiaries are giving their food to striking workers locked out of an AFFCO meat plant in Wairoa.

Ngati Kahungunu set up a resource centre in the town last week to support whanau and organisers say they've been run off their feet.

The iwi's deputy chairperson Rill Meihana says it's depressing to see people in need offering kai.

He says donations are coming in from all over the motu (country).

Mr Meihana says counselling and budgeting courses are also being set up.

He says the tribe's Wairoa Taiwhenua office is not taking sides in the industrial dispute over pay and conditions - just offering a helping hand.
