Principal welcomes faster broadband

The principal of a remote, mainly Maori school in the central North Island, says having a faster internet service will make a huge difference to school life.

The Information Technology Minister has announced the final contracts for a $30 million project to deliver high-speed broadband to the most remote schools.

Orautoha primary school, which is just north west of Raetihi, has 18 pupils - 15 of them Maori.

Principal Amohia Rolls says the current broadband is slow and often drops out, which is frustrating for both staff and pupils.

She says it can take 20 minutes to reconnect and, in some cases, a call has to be made to the internet service provider to sort out the problem.

Ms Rolls says, in the worst case, the school was without broadband for three weeks.
