Land manager eyes unlocking fund for Maori housing

The body that administers and manages Maori freehold land says it's working on ways to help Maori get a roof over their heads.

The Crown-funded Maori Trustee has been challenged by a housing group to make money available to help tangata whenua own their own homes.

The Coalition to End Homelessness suggests that interest gathered by the trustee through leasing land could be used.

Maori Trustee Jamie Tuuta says he's looking at potentially unlocking a fund.

He says there's a particular trust that was established to assist Maori.

Mr Tuuta says that trust is being reviewed to identify where the organisation could assist in providing housing and accommodation.
