The author of a book on the 28th Maori Battalion during the Second World War is going back further in time to write about Maori soldiers who served during the First World War.

Dr Monty Souter is seeking memorabilia from whanau to help him complete his project.

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage researcher is asking to see diaries, letters, postcards, photos and maps as well as mementoes the men brought back home from overseas.

With the centenary of the war coming up during 2014 to 2018, he says, it's a fitting time to write a book.
