A new Royal Society of New Zealand award for social science has been named after Sir Mason Durie, deputy vice-chancellor at Massey University.

The Mason Durie medal recognises its namesake's outstanding contribution to the scientific study of human society and social relationships.

The new honour will be awarded later in the year to a social scientist whose work, which originated in New Zealand, has made an international contribution.
