The Auditor-General's office says it has received a request to look into aspects of funding relating to Te Taukura on the Wellington waterfront.
Te Wharewaka o Poneke, which was opened on Waitangi Day last year, was at the centre of a lengthy dispute about a specially built waka.
Elders from a Wellington-based Taranaki tribal collective last year also argued a hui should not be held at the site because it lacked a cultural connection.
The Auditor-General's office says it is too early to say how it will respond to the request, but inquiries are carried out in private.
It could not confirm who lodged the request.
