Waikato River Authority - run jointly by the Government and iwi - says 22 major projects will be funded for a combined total of $4.7 million.

Earlier in the year $800,000 was allocated to 24 projects, bringing the total spent in the first round of funding to $5.5 million.

A total of $210 million in government funding has been committed for the next 30 years to restore and protect the river, which drives many hydro-electric power stations and provides drinking water for much of Auckland.

The largest project to be given funding in this round is to be run by DairyNZ and is aimed at reducing nutrient loads and sedimentation in the upper Karapiro catchment of the Waikato River.
