Maori Statutory Board hits the road

The Independent Maori Statutory Board is going on the road in Auckland from Tuesday finding out what mana whenua think the local council should do for them.

From Tuesday, it is visiting six marae to hear about a range of kaupapa (issues), including the use of Te Reo Maori, high quality and affordable housing and co-governance of natural resources.

The hui over the next two weeks are part of the Maori Wellbeing Plan for Tamaki Makaurau - which aims to help shape Auckland Council's long-term planning.

Board chairman David Taipari says different marae will have different requirements.

He says they might need a road, community, sporting or education facilities or they might be looking for assistance in developing their community marae.
