A South Taranaki iwi incorporation says it is working with the Ministry for Primary Industries on customary rights protocols and fisheries plans to conserve kaimoana stocks in their coastal rohe.

Ngaruahine sub-tribes have recently made applications to gather whitebait as part of their customary rights under the Foreshore and Seabed Act.

Chair of Nga Hapu o Ngaruahine Iwi Incorporation Daisy Noble says her iwi has been given the opportunity to foster better links with the ministry to work together on a plan of sustainability.

She says as an iwi that is currently in the Treaty settlement process they have a chance to put a fisheries plan in place.
