Taranaki iwi seeks better links with DoC over mountain

Taranaki iwi say they are looking at building a better relationship with the Department of Conservation - particularly in developing cultural protocols for mountain users.

The Taranaki Iwi Trust Board met with mountain users on Wednesday to spell out which sites on the maunga need to be treated with particular care and to share ideas about what is appropriate behaviour on Mount Taranaki.

Trust general manager Leeana Poutu says there will be an opportunity during the Treaty settlement process to look at a partnership arrangement between iwi and DoC to maintain the maunga.

Ms Poutu says tribes that go through the Treaty settlement process usually draw up protocols with DoC over conservation estates, and her iwi will be interested in talking about this with the department.
