The Maori Language Commission is targeting intermediate level learners of te reo with two reo Maori booklets being made available at a major supermarket chain during Maori language week.

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori has released two new phrase booklets to help promote the theme of Arohatia te reo or Cherish the language, for this year's Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori taking place from 23 - 29 July.

Commission chief executive Glenis Phillip-Barbara says typically they just produce one booklet for the promotional week aimed at beginners, but this year they wanted to appeal to more advanced learners.

She says the reo Maori booklet, is for intermediate speakers, and provides tips and hints about how speakers can improve their language skills through correct and informed use of ancient proverbs, colloquial sayings, similes and metaphors.

Resources for Maori Language Week 2012 include bilingual and reo Maori full colour booklets Arohatia te Reo, with helpful phrases, words and activities for a range of settings in the community.

Resources include posters, stickers, wristbands, balloons, iron-on tee shirt transfers and more.
