New campaign targets binge drinking

The Alcohol Advisory Council says its new campaign to reduce alcohol related harm in Maori communities will target binge drinking.

It's encouraging tangata whenua to join initiatives such as Dame June Mariu's project to get people to play netball - so they live healthily and cut their drinking by focussing on sport.

Alcohol Advisory Council Maori manager Matiu Julian says in a lot of cases when Maori drink, they abuse it.

He says the 'Taihoa - ease up on the drink' message is targeting binge drinking - because it's most harmful to Maori communities.
