Aukland iwi calls hui over Treaty claim

7:28 pm on 15 June 2012

Auckland iwi Ngai Tai ki Tamaki - the only tribe in the region which has not yet endorsed a major Waitangi Treaty deal with the Crown - is calling on its members to attend a hui on "concerns that are yet to be resolved".

Ngai Tai ki Tamaki declines to say publicly why it hasn't initialled a deed of settlement, but has said it won't put pen to paper until until it's happy that it's achieving the best outcomes for its people.

Another 12 iwi and hapu of the Tamaki Collective initialled an agreement with the Crown last week, a step which brings them closer to owning maunga and some islands.

Ngai Tai ki Tamaki is due to hold a meeting on the settlement at the end of July or early August.

Staff at the office of the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations says they understand Ngai Tai ki Tamaki isn't refusing to initial the deed, just that it needs more time to read the paperwork.
