Taonga puoro musician Horomona Horo hopes his recent collaboration with with classical musicians will bring a new breath of life to showcasing traditional Maori instruments.

Mr Horo was asked to feature on a CD of chamber music by Waikato University Associate Professor Martin Lodge blending Western instruments with taonga puoro.

The CD is titled Toru and the title track is a trio of clarinet, cello and taonga puoro.

Horomona Horo says the track he's playing on is called Hau and refers to the four winds and Tawhirimatea - the Maori demigod of the weather.

He says Hau speaks like the wind - there are times of subtlety and other times when the wind is blasting through.

It also features Waikato University research associate Dr Richard Nunns on the ancient instruments, Peter Scholes on clarinet and James Tennant on cello.
