Ngati Kahungunu iwi is coming to the end of another series of successful Matariki celebrations.

Over the past few weeks a number of events have been held in Hawke's Bay, the latest one ending in Wairoa last Friday night.

The iwi's promotions manager, Te Rangi Huata, says they have all been very successful and well-attended.

He says each of Ngati Kahungunu's Matariki celebrations, which give thanks for the food harvest and welcome in a new planting season, are the best attended winter gatherings in Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.

Mr Huata says every year almost half the population of Wairoa turn out for a variety of Maori games, kite flying, music and fireworks.

He says the iwi's last Matariki celebration begins at 4pm Friday 6 July in Masterton.
