The commercial arm of Waikato-Tainui iwi expects the use of technology will determine the final number of jobs created by its proposed inland port near Hamilton
Tainui Holdings wants 500 hectares of land it owns at Ruakura re-zoned, so it can begin development on a multi-billion dollar freight hub in 2014.
Chief executive Mike Pohio says the project will result in employment for between 6,000 and 12,000 people.
He says the more technologies such as robotics are used to provide storage and transportation of goods by road and rail then fewer jobs will be created.
Mr Pohio says ultimately it will be up to the companies which use the inland port to decide how many people they will employ.
