Research fellow takes up Fullbright scholarship

A post doctoral research fellow from Waikato University leaves for Hawaii at the end of July to take up a year-long Fullbright scholarship at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

The award is designed to assist higher education institutions in the United States expand programmes of academic exchange.

Te Raukura Roa says the University of Hawaii nominated her for the scholarship which will see her teaching classes of about 20 Hawaiian students.

She says the university has quite a strong Maori programme, which has been built up under the guidance of Dr Mary Boyce of New Zealand.

Dr Roa says as well as teaching level one and two Te Reo Maori, she plans to introduce a paper on traditional Maori poetry and performing arts to the course.
