Corporal Willie Apiata is joining the ranks of a South Auckland outdoor pursuits centre, after on Wednesday announcing he was quitting the SAS.
He is being employed full-time by the High Wire Charitable Trust in Papakura - an area which is also home to the army's elite forces.
His job will be to run a camp at Awhitu Peninsula in Manukau, teaching youth offenders and at risk children outdoor and life skills.
Trust chairman Calum Penrose says Corporal Apiata is the perfect role model.
Corporal Apiata, 40, was awarded the Victoria Cross in 2007 for rescuing a wounded comrade in Afghanistan.
He says he intends to stay on with the military, by joining the SAS Reserve Forces.
