New Maori Language Commissioners

The Maori Language Commission is appointing two new commissioners on Wednesday - the 25th anniversary of the creation of Maori language week.

Doctor Katarina Edmonds and Doctor Poia Rewi are taking up the positions.

They're both proficient in te reo and have contributed to the language through their extensive work in education.

As part of their role, they are in charge of overseeing the commission, delegating responsibilities to the chief executive and reporting to Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples.

Meanwhile, Dr Sharples will farewell retiring commissioners, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi and Ruakere Hond on Wednesday afternoon.

Dr Edmonds, completed her doctorate in Hawai'i Indigenous Language and Culture Revitalisation at the University of Hawai'i.

Dr Rewi is an associate professor at Otago University.
