Maori agribusinesses urged to take interest in fund

The Ministry for Primary Industries is keen for Maori agribusinesses all over New Zealand to take an interest in a fund designed to promote the sustainable use of resources.

The ministry, which operates a multi-million-dollar fund open to all farmers, has for the first time set aside $1 million for co-investing with Maori farmers on specific projects.

Maori Primary Sector Partnerships deputy director Ben Dalton says the ministry has consulted with the Maori Trustee and iwi leaders on what the funding priorities should be.

He says governance and restrictions relating to Maori land legislation are big issues for many Maori incorporations, as is the lack of suitably qualified farm managers and senior staff.
