Ministry backs Kaikoura runanga to extend fishing rahui

Updated at 6:55 pm on 15 August 2012

A ban on fishing in some waters off Kaikoura has been extended following a push from local mana whenua to rebuild fish stocks.

Te Runanga o Kaikoura applied to renew the rahui - and the Ministry of Primary Industries agreed to the temporary closure of Wakatu Quay for another two years until 17 August 2014.

Te Runanga spokesperson Raewyn Solomon says they don't want to see the area being re-opened until fish stocks are replenished.
