Tongan King plans to visit Maori ventures

10:30 am on 24 August 2012

The Tongan king is visiting Maori enterprises such as dairy company Miraka to get business tips to take home.

King Tupou VI arrived in New Zealand for the first time last week, ahead of his attendance at the Maori King's coronation in Ngaruawahia on Saturday.

The head Waikato-Tainui organiser for the coronation, Taitimu Maipi, hosted King Tupou during the koroneihana (coronation), and arranged visits for the tribe's royal guest.

He says King Tupou visited some Waikato-Tainui ventures in areas such as business, housing and health.

Mr Maipi says arrangements are being made for him to visit other Maori enterprises in Rotorua and Taupo. He is due to look at Maori ventures in tourism and retail, and also wants to find out how Maori health organisations are run.

The Tongan king's visit to Rotorua will begin with a powhiri at Te Papaiouru Marae in Ohinemutu from 10am on Thursday.
